I explore music as a subject matter, especially the emotions and narrative concepts surrounding the lyrics and sound of a song or album, translating sound into something visual. My style is defined by visual movement and intentional use of distortion. I apply warping, blurring, pixelation, and chromatic aberration to various forms in a piece, but I most often apply it to typography. Typography is a major element of my work, and I distort it to enhance the visual movement of a piece and to properly communicate expression. My use of typography is often paired with long lines as well as geometric and organic forms to further increase the visual movement of a piece. When choosing color for a composition, I pick one base color that relates to the emotional response I have to whatever I’m inspired by. From there, I create a palette that compliments the base color.
A major goal of my work is to promote expression and style over function. I believe that through someone’s visual style we can learn about them as a person, and therefore we can learn about and appreciate entire cultures through visual styles. Another goal of my work is to promote other creatives, especially musicians and film directors. Marian Bantjes, Ralph Schraivogel, April Greiman, and Mike Joyce are a few designers that have specifically influenced me to implement distortion and a stronger sense of visual movement into my work. Musicians that influence my work include My Bloody Valentine, New Order, Talking Heads, The Cure, Aphex Twin, Iron Maiden, Beach House, and Marvin Gaye.
